The ideal times to explore Taiwan are during spring and autumn. Spring brings pleasant temperatures, making it a great time to enjoy the blooming flowers and clear skies before the summer heat and plum rain arrive. Autumn also offers mild weather as the intensity of summer fades, making it perfect for outdoor adventures and sightseeing.

However, Taiwan’s charm is present year-round. Summers can be hot and humid, while winter is mild, especially in the north. Regardless of the season, visitors can discover vibrant night markets, relax in soothing hot springs, and savor delicious local cuisine throughout the year.

Taiwan’s pleasant autumns and mild winters make hiking and cycling popular in the cooler months. Cyclists can enjoy scenic routes, from leisurely rides along the Tamsui River to the challenging Wuling Pass in Taroko Gorge. Hikers can witness sunsets from Elephant Mountain, stroll through moss-covered cedars in Alishan, or trek the stunning trails of Yushan National Park. Monthly marathons and the Iron Man Taiwan triathlon in November draw athletes from around the globe. After your adventures, relax in Beitou’s sulfuric hot springs or Guanziling’s mud springs. Autumn also celebrates diversity at Taipei Pride, Asia’s largest Pride parade.

Month-by-month guide for traveling in Taipei

January is one of Taiwan’s quietest tourism months, following the busy New Year’s Eve weekend. Historically, it’s the second least popular month to visit, coming after December’s peak season. This lull occurs between the Christmas celebrations and the Lunar New Year holiday, which in 2025 falls at the end of January.

Being the first true winter month, January is often cold, with the possibility of snow in the mountains. This month also offers a glimpse of locals preparing for the Lunar New Year, and you can enjoy early cherry blossoms and relax in Taiwan’s hot springs.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

Visiting Taiwan in February can be tricky due to the Lunar New Year holiday. This period may not be ideal, so check my guide for details on what to expect in Taipei.

On the positive side, February offers the chance to experience the magical Lantern Festival on February 12, alongside events like the thrilling Yanshui Fireworks Festival.

Weather-wise, February is often cold, wet, and gray in Taipei, marking the peak of winter. However, it’s the best time to see cherry blossoms and enjoy the hot springs, especially in southern Taiwan. Despite some challenges, February has plenty of highlights.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

March is a wonderful time to visit Taiwan, as everyone returns to work after the Lunar New Year holiday and there are no national holidays to disrupt your plans.

This month serves as a transitional period between winter and spring. While Northern Taiwan, including Taipei, may still experience some chilly weather and light rain, the temperatures remain perfect for enjoying hot springs.

In southern cities like Tainan and Kaohsiung, the weather starts to warm up, with Taipei feeling pleasantly mild by the end of the month.

March is also an excellent time for viewing cherry blossoms, along with blooming tulips, azaleas, and calla lilies. With mild weather and fewer crowds, it’s ideal for long walks, rural exploration, and experiencing everyday life in Taiwan.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

April is one of my favorite months in Taiwan as spring finally arrives! This means warm, pleasant weather—ideal for hiking and perfect for families visiting the island. In southern Taiwan, it can already feel like summer.

The month typically begins with a busy 4-day weekend, making popular destinations like Kenting National Park quite crowded. Several major music festivals also take place during this time.

If you visit Alishan in early April, you may catch the last of the cherry blossoms, but be prepared for crowds and early bookings. Additionally, beautiful calla lilies bloom near Taipei, and a highlight of the month is the Matsu Pilgrimage, one of the largest in the world.

Is May a good time to visit Taiwan? May represents the peak of spring, bringing warm temperatures as summer approaches. While it’s typically comfortable, the arrival of the Plum Rain monsoon in early May can lead to several rainy days, particularly in Taipei. If you prefer sunny weather, you might want to consider visiting at a different time.

On the plus side, there are plenty of things to enjoy in Taipei during May. You might spot fireflies lighting up the city, and other regions enjoy great weather for exploring attractions. Additionally, May is ideal for visiting Taiwan’s offshore islands, like Penghu and Orchid Island, which celebrate various festivals this month.

June marks the transition from spring rains to the start of summer in Taiwan. Temperatures and humidity rise, which some may enjoy while others might find uncomfortable. Expect sunny days paired with increased rainfall, often resulting in late afternoon downpours.

One of the highlights in June is the Dragon Boat Festival, celebrated from June 8-10 in 2024. In Taipei, the Xia Hai City God Parade is a lively and noisy event that attracts many visitors.

Overall, June is a great time to embrace the subtropical summer atmosphere before the much hotter and more humid weather of July and August sets in.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

Ready for some serious heat? July is the hottest and sunniest month in Taiwan, so be prepared to sweat and seek refuge in air-conditioned spots like 7-Eleven.

Despite the high temperatures, many locals embrace summer by exploring popular sights and beaches, resulting in larger crowds. July also marks the beginning of typhoon season, with the first storms typically arriving this month. In recent years, however, the first typhoon has occasionally been delayed until August, so you may luck out.

Whether you love the tropical heat or are simply traveling during the summer, visiting Taiwan in July will certainly be an unforgettable experience.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

August in Taiwan brings hot and humid days, marking the peak of summer alongside July. If you’ve been in the country for a while, you might find yourself getting accustomed to the heat by this time. By the end of August, temperatures typically start to drop slightly.

This month is one of the sunniest yet rainiest in Taiwan, often featuring a significant typhoon. It’s crucial to know how to handle a typhoon if it occurs during your stay, but this shouldn’t deter you from visiting.

With numerous summer events and activities, August remains an exciting time for those who enjoy the subtropical heat. Additionally, Ghost Month adds a layer of intrigue to your travels, along with unique customs and traditions.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

September marks the final month of summer in Taiwan, with average temperatures a few degrees lower than July and August, making it much more manageable. By the end of the month, the weather can be pleasantly warm, making it one of the best times to visit.

The Mid-Autumn Festival, or Moon Festival, typically falls in September (September 17 in 2024). Despite its name, this festival occurs at the end of summer, welcoming early autumn.

As schools resume and people return to work, September usually sees fewer visitors, making it a great choice for those wanting to avoid crowds while enjoying summer-like conditions. It’s also an excellent time for beachgoers and features events like the Sun Moon Lake Mass Swim.

However, be aware that September is one of the months when typhoons are most likely to occur in Taiwan, and it is also the rainiest month in Taipei. While the rainfall can be intense, most days are actually sunny, and areas in central and southern Taiwan experience much less rain.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

October is regarded as the first month of autumn in Taiwan, bringing pleasantly warm days and often clear blue skies in Taipei—perfect for hiking. In southern Taiwan, the weather still feels like summer but with less rain. While late-season typhoons can occur, October is typically one of the best months to visit in terms of weather.

This season offers great opportunities for exploration, and you can enjoy exciting Halloween celebrations and Asia’s largest Pride Parade at the end of the month.

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

November is one of my favorite months to visit Taiwan. It’s typically one of the driest months (though late-season typhoons can occasionally make an appearance), and the weather in Taipei shifts from warm to crisp and cool, while southern Taiwan remains pleasantly warm.

This month marks the peak of autumn, bringing stunning foliage across the island. I’ll share the best spots to see autumn colors in Taiwan. November also invites thoughts of relaxing in one of Taiwan’s many inviting hot springs.

Additionally, outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy the blooming silvergrass and the arrival of butterflies at Maolin Scenic Area. If you prefer mild weather over intense summer heat and want to avoid damp, chilly winters, November could be the perfect time for your visit!

Trip ideas and travel guides for exploring Taipei

December is the most popular month to visit Taiwan, and that may come as no surprise. Many travelers choose to spend December in Taiwan for various reasons, including enjoying a Christmas holiday abroad, escaping the cold weather in Europe or North America, and avoiding the heat of Southeast Asia. Visitors can also soak in Taiwan’s fantastic hot springs, enjoy flower viewing, and admire autumn foliage in the mountains.

The festive Christmas activities and one of the world’s most spectacular New Year’s Eve fireworks displays make December an exceptional time to visit.

However, since it’s the peak tourist month, expect significant crowds and sold-out hotels and trains. It’s advisable to book your accommodations and travel as soon as possible, especially with New Year’s Eve being the busiest night of the year in Taipei.

December is also a transitional month between autumn and winter. Chilly winter weather begins to settle in Taipei, while southern Taiwan remains pleasantly warm and dry. You can check my Taiwan weather guide for a comparison of temperatures and rainfall throughout the year.

Vietnam is just epic in every sense! Stephen at My Way Travel built us a bespoke tour to our requested place's from HoChiMin to Phan Thiet, DaLat, NaTrang, HoiAn, Halong Bay ending in Hanoi & it was amazing! All hotels, 3 tour guides over 5 day tours , drivers & transport worked very well & Stephen responded very quickly to any queries. We can’t thank or recommend him highly enough for helping us create an amazing adventure for a 70+ couple where everything was booked & organised but we had plenty of free time to explore on our own & find places for dinner most nights of our 18day trip. I’ll admit I was a little worried about using an unknown to me online agent but I really didn’t need to worry. The only thing I/we got wrong was not realising how tiring a busy tour can be especially in the heat so I’d recommend having a few days on a beach or round a pool relaxing before retuning back to Europe of further afield! Thanks Stephen for creating a well priced pretty last min wonderful tour for us!

Wow, what a trip and experience. My Way Travel did an excellent job in creating a customized private tour itinerary for our 5 week trip to Indochina. Stephen was very responsive and easy to work with in creating a perfect itinerary, customized to our interests, budget, and timeframe. The logistics were well managed and all the tour guides and drivers in all 4 countries were fantastic. Stephen kept in touch throughout our trip to ensure everything was going well. The drivers were all excellent, prompt, and very safe drivers. Special call out to our guides; Tony, Kay, and Loc in Vietnam, Sony and Sambath in Cambodia, and Anne in Thailand for a fantastic cultural and historical experience in your respective countries. These guides were the best and really made our trip special. The sights that we saw were incredible, including Ha Long Bay and of course, Ankgor Wat. We really enjoyed the elephant sanctuary in Laos and the Laos city of Luang Prabang is a hidden gem. The bike tours that we did in Hoi An (Kay) and the Mekong Delta (Loc) to really get into the countryside and engage with local families was an incredible experience that we really enjoyed and will always cherish. We even got to stop at a local school and interact with some of the school children trying to practice their English which was pretty cool. We had a great bike tour in Siem Reap (Sambath) and all the incredible temples around Ankgor Wat. The tours that we had to understand and experience these countries from a historical and cultural perspective, brought to life by our tour guides, really made this trip a unique experience. We were well taken care of throughout our travels and the service and people were so friendly. We would highly recommend My Way Travel for your next trip to SE Asia and will not hesitate to use them in the future. Hopefully you get lucky enough to have some of the tour guides that we had.

This was the fourth trip we have done with My Way Travel and arranged by Stephen. As always it was impeccably organised from arriving in Bangkok, flights to Chiang Rai, tour to the elephant sanctuary, to Krabi for a few days at the beach then transfer to Phnom Pen for the higlight of our trip, a cruise up the Mekong on a seriously luxurious boat, then transfer to Seam Riep. The hotels were excellent, the transfers seemless with good english speaking guides. We cannot recommend Stephen more highly.

An amazing trip out together by Stephen at My Way Travel! This was our second trip ( went to Vietnam and Cambodia 2019). Stephen is great to work with- very flexible and listens to what we wanted to do. This trip was originally scheduled for April 2020. A honest company that asked if I wanted my deposit back and I said no - that I would use it in a future trip! How many companies around the world did this???? We had great guides In Bangkok and Chiang Rai and Chiang Rai. Fon was full of energy and fun in Bangkok. Ann was one of the best guides I have ever had- she took us to a couple of places not noted on the tour. We went for a hike at a waterfall and visited the cave where the Thai boys were rescued in the cave. Both Ann and Fon gave us wonderful suggestions for restaurants. I would absolutely recommend Stephen and My Way Travel! We plan to use him again in planning Bali!

Last October 10, we contacted Stephen, the organizer of our dream trip to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia in 2018, to ask about Bali trips. He enthusiastically confirmed his expertise in crafting Balinese adventures. We were thrilled to entrust My Way Travel with planning our Balinese getaway. On January 1, we embarked on our Balinese adventure, leaving behind the familiar comforts of Riga, Latvia. As our plane soared into the sky, our minds were filled with images of emerald rice terraces, cascading waterfalls, and serene Balinese temples. Our journey unfolded like a mesmerizing tapestry, each destination adding a new strand of enchantment to our memories. We immersed ourselves in the heart of Ubud, where the rhythmic melodies of gamelan and the intoxicating aroma of incense filled the air. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jatiluwih captivated us with its cascading rice terraces, a testament to the harmonious balance between humans and nature. From the lush jungles of Munduk, we discovered Tirta Gangga, a royal water palace adorned with statues and fountains. The tranquil ambiance of this enchanting haven enveloped us in a sense of serenity and rejuvenation. As our journey drew to a close, we found ourselves basking in the sun-kissed sands of Nusa Dua, where the crystal-clear waters beckoned us to take a refreshing dip. The delectable flavors of Balinese cuisine tantalized our taste buds, leaving us yearning for more of the island's vibrant culinary scene. With each passing day, our appreciation for Stephen's masterful planning deepened. He had seamlessly woven together a tapestry of experiences that perfectly matched our desires, transforming our Balinese adventure into an unforgettable symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors. While the word "perfect" may seem insufficient to describe the exquisiteness of our Balinese escapade, it remains the only word that truly captures the essence of Stephen's impeccable craftsmanship.

We had a fantastic time exploring Vietnam, Thailand & Cambodia with My Way Travel. The trip was beautifully organized to ensure we saw it all, yet paced so that we had plenty of time for spontaneous discovery. The guides were superb, they clearly love their work and as a result, we received fascinating insights into the culture of each country. The pre-planning by the My Way Travel team made sure our specific areas of interest were also covered and we particularly enjoyed the private market tour, cooking class and dinner in Chiang Mai. As you would expect, accommodations and transfers were all top notch. We are looking forward to our next journey! Every activity was coordinated to perfection and we couldn’t be more happy.
