Borneo - Getting to know Sipadan Island

rn

rn

If you’re in Borneo to dive, or if you’re a PADI holder on the look out of for an opportunity, this is the place to be. Situated off Borneo’s south east coast and just an hour by boat from the town of Semporna, Sipadan Island has been designated a national marine park thanks to its offshore bounties. The region has an abundance of coral reef, a multitude of world-renowned dive sites and clear waters, and the palm-fringed islands of Sipadan and Mabul are an essential stopover for any lover of the deep blue (both the diving and snorkeling are superb).

Sipadan Island, Borneo

Staying on Sipadan is no longer possible - this is to ensure the safe breeding of turtles that come and lay their eggs here every year, and to preserve the island's outstanding natural beauty. Mabul Island or Kapalai Island will be your base during any stay. Sipadan is far from out of bounds though - it’s just 15 minutes away by boat.

Boats run daily, and there are a number of excursions that can be included in any visit if you find the time to drag yourself out of the water or away from the sand.
