Ubud, located in the heart of Bali, has a rich history as an artistic center, with its cultural growth dating back to the late 19th century. Over the years, it has become a vibrant hub of Balinese arts and crafts, drawing the attention of Western artists and intellectuals in the 1930s. Today, Ubud stands as Bali's cultural nucleus, offering a tapestry of stone and woodcarving, vibrant temples and ceremonies, art galleries, traditional dance, skilled silversmiths, and a tantalizing culinary scene.

When you choose to stay in Ubud, you have the option to be in the center of the town, immersed in its colorful activity, or nestled in the countryside amidst serene paddy fields. Both provide easy access to local markets, traditional craft shops, and exquisite restaurants.

Around Ubud, you'll find some of Bali's most ancient and culturally significant sites, especially to the east and north. Notable places include the sacred Pura Samuan Tiga temple, the mysterious Goa Gajah (Elephant Cave) from the 11th century, and the 25-meter-long carved cliff face known as Yeh Pulu, dating back to the late 14th century. It's important to note that when visiting these sites, wearing a sarong is customary for both men and women, as they are considered holy places. For those interested in metalwork, Celuk, located just south of Ubud, is a center for gold and silver jewelry.

rn

To the north, the towering Gunung Batur volcano, with its 1,717-meter-high volcanic cone, offers breathtaking views of lush rice paddies and terraces. West of Gunung Batur lies the enchanting Lake Bratan, home to the serene temple of Pura Ulun Danu Bratan, framed by the dramatic backdrop of Gunung Catur.

rn

East of Ubud, you'll find the less-visited region of Sideman and Iseh, offering towering views of the sacred Gunung Agung volcano, as well as picturesque rural landscapes and terraced rice fields. To the southwest, there's the tranquil coast of Yeh Gangga, the well-preserved 17th-century architecture at Kerambitan, and Bali's most iconic and photographed temple, Pura Tanah Lot.

rn

Ubud and its surroundings present a captivating blend of culture, history, and natural beauty, making it an ideal base for exploring the best that Bali has to offer.
