Best time to visit in Cambodia

The best time to explore Cambodia is from November to April, when rainfall is minimal, and the skies are typically clear, making it ideal for a peaceful retreat along the southern coast. With year-round temperatures averaging around 68°F, the climate remains pleasantly warm.

From May to October, humidity rises along with rainfall, which is vital for crop growth in the country. Don’t let this deter you from traveling; the landscapes become lush and vibrant, rivers swell, and the temples remain tranquil. It’s an excellent opportunity to visit the more remote temples, which often experience fewer tourists.

As summer concludes, Tonle Sap, Southeast Asia’s largest freshwater lake, awakens, revealing the enchanting floating villages that define this unique region of Cambodia.

During Cambodia’s green season (June to August), before the monsoons arrive, you’ll find an abundance of fresh vegetables and food, tranquil temples, and fantastic hotel deals, making it an ideal period for exploration.

Overall, January offers a wonderful combination of pleasant weather, cultural exploration, and leisure, making it one of the best times to visit Cambodia.

You can wander through the historical sites at your leisure, enjoying the rich history and stunning architecture without the discomfort of extreme heat.

This month also presents perfect conditions for river travel, allowing you to navigate the picturesque waterways and experience the serene beauty of the landscapes. The Tonle Sap still retains a substantial volume of water, making it a beautiful time to explore the largest freshwater lake in Southeast Asia. Visiting Cambodia in March

March marks the peak travel season in Cambodia, attracting many visitors eager to experience the country’s rich culture and stunning landscapes. During this month, temperatures typically rise to the high 80°F range, offering warm, sunny days that are perfect for exploring.

However, as the month progresses, the water levels in the Tonle Sap begin to decline, which may diminish some of the lake’s impressive scenery. Despite this, there are still plenty of activities and sights to enjoy, from visiting the majestic temples of Angkor Wat to exploring bustling markets and local cuisine.

Due to the popularity of this travel period, it’s advisable to secure accommodations well in advance, as hotels tend to become fully booked. Whether you’re touring ancient ruins or immersing yourself in vibrant local culture, March in Cambodia offers an unforgettable experience filled with warmth and adventure.

Visiting Cambodia in April

April is still part of the peak travel season in Cambodia, with temperatures soaring, often exceeding 91°F. To make the most of your visit, it’s advisable to explore during the cooler early morning hours or later in the afternoon, rather than embarking on full-day excursions. This strategy allows you to enjoy the stunning sites without the discomfort of the midday heat.

This month also marks the celebration of Chaul Chnam, the Cambodian New Year, which occurs from April 13 to 16. During this festive time, many towns and cities become quieter as locals return to their hometowns to celebrate with family. While the rains typically hold off during this period, be prepared to get wet if you venture out during the festivities, as water splashing is a common theme during the New Year celebrations.

With its vibrant culture, stunning temples, and lively festivities, April in Cambodia offers a truly memorable travel experience infused with local traditions and rich heritage.

Visiting Cambodia in May

As the wet season draws near, May presents a fantastic opportunity to enjoy promotional shoulder season offers, with crowds beginning to thin out. While you can expect a few occasional showers during this time, they typically won’t significantly disrupt your travel plans. In fact, these showers help to alleviate the humidity, creating more comfortable conditions for exploration.

May is an excellent time to visit Cambodia’s iconic temples, vibrant markets, and beautiful landscapes without the typical tourist crowds. The lush greenery that follows the rain adds to the country’s natural beauty, making your experience even more picturesque. Whether you’re wandering through the ancient ruins of Angkor Wat or enjoying the local cuisine, you’ll find that May offers a unique blend of tranquility and adventure in Cambodia.

Visiting Cambodia in June

June marks the beginning of the rainy season in Cambodia, providing much-needed relief to farmers and a lush transformation of the landscapes. While you can expect short and sharp showers, they typically won’t interfere with your travel plans, as plenty of sunshine still shines through.

This month also sees a decrease in tourist crowds, making temples and other attractions quieter, allowing for a more serene experience while exploring. Moreover, you can take advantage of various hotel promotions during Cambodia’s “green season,” offering excellent deals for accommodation.

Whether you’re wandering through the ancient temples of Angkor Wat or enjoying the vibrant local culture, June presents a unique and rewarding opportunity to experience Cambodia’s beauty with fewer tourists while benefiting from the refreshing rain.

Visiting Cambodia in July

In July, the rainy season continues across Cambodia, prompting travelers to avoid the southern coast’s beaches. However, temperatures begin to cool slightly, averaging around 80°F. This time of year sees some of the outer temples standing deserted, providing a wonderful opportunity to explore lesser-known destinations without the usual crowds.

Many families choose to visit during this period, as it aligns well with European summer holidays, allowing for educational trips and bonding experiences. With fewer tourists at popular sites, July is an excellent time to discover Cambodia’s hidden gems and immerse yourself in the rich culture and history of this remarkable country. Whether you’re venturing into remote areas or visiting quieter temples, July offers a unique and peaceful travel experience in Cambodia.

Visiting Cambodia in August

In August, temperatures continue to decrease, creating a more comfortable environment for exploring the country’s stunning temples. The rainy season is in full swing, with rainfall peaking across Cambodia. While showers can be frequent, they generally last only a few hours, particularly in the northern regions, allowing plenty of time to enjoy sightseeing.

During this month, the Tonle Sap fills up once again, and the flora and fauna come to life, making it an excellent time for wildlife enthusiasts. Those interested in natural beauty will appreciate the lush landscapes and vibrant greenery that flourish during this period. August offers a unique blend of comfortable exploration and captivating wildlife experiences, making it a rewarding time to visit Cambodia.

Visiting Cambodia in September

September is known as Cambodia’s wettest month, with heavy daily showers expected. While the rain can be intense, it typically lasts only a short while, allowing for continued exploration of the country’s attractions.

However, it’s worth noting that the downpours may make some rural areas challenging to access by road, which could limit travel options in certain regions. For those seeking easier access and more favorable conditions, considering a visit in either August or October may be more appealing.

Despite the rain, September presents a unique opportunity to experience Cambodia’s lush landscapes and vibrant culture, with fewer crowds at popular sites. Travelers willing to adapt to the weather conditions can still enjoy a memorable visit during this time.

Visiting Cambodia in October

October marks a transition in Cambodia as the rains begin to taper off, and temperatures average around 81°F, creating a pleasant atmosphere for exploration. This month is an ideal time to experience the country’s lush landscapes, free from the heavy downpours of previous months. With fewer tourists around, you can beat the crowds and take advantage of early-season promotional offers on accommodations and tours.

Events & Festivals

Pchum Ben: This significant Buddhist festival is observed throughout Cambodia for 15 days, culminating in main celebrations on the final day. Families honor their deceased relatives by visiting temples and making offerings, creating a deeply spiritual atmosphere that reflects the country’s rich cultural heritage. Participating in Pchum Ben offers travelers a unique glimpse into Cambodia’s traditions and communal spirit.

Visiting Cambodia in November

November marks the return of Cambodia’s peak tourist season, attracting crowds eager to explore the renowned temples. With average temperatures around a comfortable 77°F, it’s an ideal time to venture onto Tonle Sap Lake and enjoy the scenic beauty. However, as the influx of visitors increases, hotel prices often rise, so it’s essential to book accommodations well in advance.

Events & Festivals

Bon Om Touk/Cambodian Water Festival: This vibrant festival is one of the most celebrated in the country, taking place over three days in November. The festivities include lively concerts and thrilling boat races, particularly in Phnom Penh, where locals and tourists gather to partake in the celebrations. Experiencing the Water Festival offers a unique insight into Cambodia’s culture and community spirit, making it a highlight of the November travel calendar.

Visiting Cambodia in December

December offers excellent weather across Cambodia, making it a fantastic choice for travelers looking for a memorable Christmas destination. With pleasant temperatures and clear skies, it’s a wonderful time to explore the country’s rich history, stunning landscapes, and vibrant culture.

However, due to the popularity of this season, hotels tend to get booked up well in advance. To ensure you secure your preferred accommodations, it’s advisable to make reservations early. Whether you’re visiting the iconic temples, enjoying the local cuisine, or participating in festive celebrations, December provides a delightful experience that captures the charm of Cambodia during the holiday season.

Vietnam is just epic in every sense! Stephen at My Way Travel built us a bespoke tour to our requested place's from HoChiMin to Phan Thiet, DaLat, NaTrang, HoiAn, Halong Bay ending in Hanoi & it was amazing! All hotels, 3 tour guides over 5 day tours , drivers & transport worked very well & Stephen responded very quickly to any queries. We can’t thank or recommend him highly enough for helping us create an amazing adventure for a 70+ couple where everything was booked & organised but we had plenty of free time to explore on our own & find places for dinner most nights of our 18day trip. I’ll admit I was a little worried about using an unknown to me online agent but I really didn’t need to worry. The only thing I/we got wrong was not realising how tiring a busy tour can be especially in the heat so I’d recommend having a few days on a beach or round a pool relaxing before retuning back to Europe of further afield! Thanks Stephen for creating a well priced pretty last min wonderful tour for us!

Wow, what a trip and experience. My Way Travel did an excellent job in creating a customized private tour itinerary for our 5 week trip to Indochina. Stephen was very responsive and easy to work with in creating a perfect itinerary, customized to our interests, budget, and timeframe. The logistics were well managed and all the tour guides and drivers in all 4 countries were fantastic. Stephen kept in touch throughout our trip to ensure everything was going well. The drivers were all excellent, prompt, and very safe drivers. Special call out to our guides; Tony, Kay, and Loc in Vietnam, Sony and Sambath in Cambodia, and Anne in Thailand for a fantastic cultural and historical experience in your respective countries. These guides were the best and really made our trip special. The sights that we saw were incredible, including Ha Long Bay and of course, Ankgor Wat. We really enjoyed the elephant sanctuary in Laos and the Laos city of Luang Prabang is a hidden gem. The bike tours that we did in Hoi An (Kay) and the Mekong Delta (Loc) to really get into the countryside and engage with local families was an incredible experience that we really enjoyed and will always cherish. We even got to stop at a local school and interact with some of the school children trying to practice their English which was pretty cool. We had a great bike tour in Siem Reap (Sambath) and all the incredible temples around Ankgor Wat. The tours that we had to understand and experience these countries from a historical and cultural perspective, brought to life by our tour guides, really made this trip a unique experience. We were well taken care of throughout our travels and the service and people were so friendly. We would highly recommend My Way Travel for your next trip to SE Asia and will not hesitate to use them in the future. Hopefully you get lucky enough to have some of the tour guides that we had.

This was the fourth trip we have done with My Way Travel and arranged by Stephen. As always it was impeccably organised from arriving in Bangkok, flights to Chiang Rai, tour to the elephant sanctuary, to Krabi for a few days at the beach then transfer to Phnom Pen for the higlight of our trip, a cruise up the Mekong on a seriously luxurious boat, then transfer to Seam Riep. The hotels were excellent, the transfers seemless with good english speaking guides. We cannot recommend Stephen more highly.

An amazing trip out together by Stephen at My Way Travel! This was our second trip ( went to Vietnam and Cambodia 2019). Stephen is great to work with- very flexible and listens to what we wanted to do. This trip was originally scheduled for April 2020. A honest company that asked if I wanted my deposit back and I said no - that I would use it in a future trip! How many companies around the world did this???? We had great guides In Bangkok and Chiang Rai and Chiang Rai. Fon was full of energy and fun in Bangkok. Ann was one of the best guides I have ever had- she took us to a couple of places not noted on the tour. We went for a hike at a waterfall and visited the cave where the Thai boys were rescued in the cave. Both Ann and Fon gave us wonderful suggestions for restaurants. I would absolutely recommend Stephen and My Way Travel! We plan to use him again in planning Bali!

Last October 10, we contacted Stephen, the organizer of our dream trip to Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia in 2018, to ask about Bali trips. He enthusiastically confirmed his expertise in crafting Balinese adventures. We were thrilled to entrust My Way Travel with planning our Balinese getaway. On January 1, we embarked on our Balinese adventure, leaving behind the familiar comforts of Riga, Latvia. As our plane soared into the sky, our minds were filled with images of emerald rice terraces, cascading waterfalls, and serene Balinese temples. Our journey unfolded like a mesmerizing tapestry, each destination adding a new strand of enchantment to our memories. We immersed ourselves in the heart of Ubud, where the rhythmic melodies of gamelan and the intoxicating aroma of incense filled the air. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Jatiluwih captivated us with its cascading rice terraces, a testament to the harmonious balance between humans and nature. From the lush jungles of Munduk, we discovered Tirta Gangga, a royal water palace adorned with statues and fountains. The tranquil ambiance of this enchanting haven enveloped us in a sense of serenity and rejuvenation. As our journey drew to a close, we found ourselves basking in the sun-kissed sands of Nusa Dua, where the crystal-clear waters beckoned us to take a refreshing dip. The delectable flavors of Balinese cuisine tantalized our taste buds, leaving us yearning for more of the island's vibrant culinary scene. With each passing day, our appreciation for Stephen's masterful planning deepened. He had seamlessly woven together a tapestry of experiences that perfectly matched our desires, transforming our Balinese adventure into an unforgettable symphony of sights, sounds, and flavors. While the word "perfect" may seem insufficient to describe the exquisiteness of our Balinese escapade, it remains the only word that truly captures the essence of Stephen's impeccable craftsmanship.

We had a fantastic time exploring Vietnam, Thailand & Cambodia with My Way Travel. The trip was beautifully organized to ensure we saw it all, yet paced so that we had plenty of time for spontaneous discovery. The guides were superb, they clearly love their work and as a result, we received fascinating insights into the culture of each country. The pre-planning by the My Way Travel team made sure our specific areas of interest were also covered and we particularly enjoyed the private market tour, cooking class and dinner in Chiang Mai. As you would expect, accommodations and transfers were all top notch. We are looking forward to our next journey! Every activity was coordinated to perfection and we couldn’t be more happy.
