Thailand – Getting to know Chiang Rai

Much of the province of Chiang Rai is located within the renowned ‘Golden Triangle’ area where Myanmar, Laos and Thailand converge. The Chiang Rai region is blessed with an abundance of natural attractions, as well as many sites of cultural interest.

Chiang Rai is a fairly small city with a laid back atmosphere, easily explored by trishaw or on foot. It’s home to a handful of interesting temples and a popular night market where villagers from the surrounding hills sell their wares.

What to do in Chiang Rai

Regional highlights range from the magnificent mountain scenery, ruins of ancient settlements, historical sites, Buddhist shrines and ethnic villages – the province is home to a multitude of hill tribes who maintain intriguing traditional lifestyles.

Spend a day at the Elephant Valley Project. Elephant care and conservation are at the heart of the project’s ethos. There is no riding, tricks or shows, instead the elephants are free to wander and graze, break down trees and play in the mud! It’s a unique opportunity to experience and learn about these amazing animals up close.

For those interested in the natural side of Chiang Rai, jungle trekking is recommended. There are a vast selection of trails, ranging from easy to advanced trekking. You can stay overnight in villages, using minority tribe ‘home stays’ as a base. When run properly, these makeshift hotels not only provide you with a bed, but benefit the entire community.
