Kanchanaburi
A riverside city in Thailand, is best known for its iconic metal bridge over the Kwai River, immortalized in Pierre Boulle’s 1952 novel The Bridge on the River Kwai. The book highlights the city’s tragic role in the ‘Death Railway,’ a railway built by Japanese forces during World War II, using Allied prisoners of war (POWs) and Asian laborers. Today, Kanchanaburi serves as both a memorial and a bustling destination, offering a combination of historical significance, scenic beauty, and vibrant local life.
The city has become home to several museums, war cemeteries, and monuments. A visit to the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre, an interactive museum dedicated to the ‘Death Railway,’ is a perfect starting point to learn about the history of the railway and the POWs who endured its harsh conditions. The railway itself has been restored and still runs a few trains daily, crossing the famous bridge and passing the Tha Kilen Viaduct, a precarious wooden bridge that offers stunning views of the river below.
A river cruise will take you under the bridge and upstream, offering glimpses of rural life and jungle landscapes. Another poignant stop is Hellfire Pass, 80 km (50 miles) northwest of Kanchanaburi, where POWs chiselled through a nearly impassable rock section of the railway. The Hellfire Pass Memorial Museum, accompanied by an audio tour of survivor accounts, provides insight into the harrowing history of this location. A walk to the cutting itself takes you through a series of memorials and sections of the railway, with visible chisel marks etched into the rock.
For a change of pace, head north to Erawan National Park, where the Erawan Falls, famous for its seven levels of aquamarine pools, offer a serene spot for swimming. The park is also a great base for outdoor adventures such as kayaking, canoeing, cycling, and jungle treks. While the trails are not always clearly marked, guided tours are available for a more comprehensive experience.
