Discovering the Perhentian Islands
Just off the northeast coast of Peninsular Malaysia, this pair of islands is famous for its pristine white sand beaches, lush jungle interiors, and crystal-clear waters, offering some of the best snorkeling in the region. The islands are also home to numerous dive sites and serve as a great base for exploring nearby smaller islands.
Kecil and Besar Islands
The smaller of the two, Kecil, offers quieter beaches and simple accommodations like BuBu Long Beach Resort. Despite its more basic infrastructure, the island’s location within a marine sanctuary makes it a popular spot for underwater exploration. Besar, on the other hand, draws larger crowds but remains the more popular choice.
Underwater Wonders
The area is known for its coral reefs, which have largely withstood bleaching events. A notable dive site is Sugar Wreck, a shipwreck from the 2000 monsoon season, home to vibrant sea life such as barracudas, lionfish, and trevallies. Diving enthusiasts also frequent Tokong Laut, a coral-rich underwater pinnacle off the northwest shore of Kecil, where you’ll encounter schools of damselfish, yellowtail snappers, and various types of sharks.
Turtle Beach and Nearby Islets
Turtle Beach, located on the northern shore of Besar, is accessible only by boat and serves as a nesting ground for green and hawksbill sea turtles. The tranquil beach is ideal for snorkeling or enjoying a picnic while soaking up the sun. To the northwest, you’ll find uninhabited islets like Susu Dara, Rawa, and Serenggeh, which also offer great diving opportunities.
Protecting the Marine Life
In line with conservation efforts, most water sports are banned in the area. However, the islands boast almost two dozen PADI dive facilities for those keen to explore the ocean’s wonders.
Jungle Exploration
For those seeking adventure beyond the water, the islands offer narrow jungle trails teeming with wildlife, including brightly colored birds, monitor lizards, and macaques. Keep an eye out for large spiders, too — they’re part of the jungle’s diverse ecosystem.
