Discover Vang Vieng: Laos’ Adventure Hub with a Fresh New Vibe
Once a magnet for backpackers in search of adventure, this riverside town is experiencing a revival, thanks to new comfortable accommodations and a government initiative aimed at enhancing its appeal. Tucked into a lush valley along the Nam Song River, it serves as a convenient stop over between Luang Prabang and Vientiane. However, the overland drive, while incredibly scenic, is filled with hairpin turns and steep climbs – something to keep in mind if you’re prone to motion sickness.
Surrounded by striking limestone karsts, the area offers an exciting range of outdoor activities, from tubing and kayaking to rock climbing, trekking, and cycling expeditions to hidden caves and nearby villages. A visit to the local organic farm is also worthwhile for a taste of their renowned Mulberry Tea, or you can immerse yourself in the region’s culinary flavors through a cooking class.
The town itself is easy to explore on foot, with a good selection of riverside bars and restaurants. Comfortable hotels cluster along the water’s edge, making it easy to enjoy sunset views after a day of adventure. For convenience, there’s a small hospital, post office, several ATMs, and plenty of bicycle rental shops – one of the best ways to explore the surrounding countryside.
