Cycling Through Jatiluwih: A Scenic Escape into Bali’s Green Heart

Your journey begins early in the morning with a two-hour drive heading north from Tabanan, through charming Balinese towns and lush landscapes. The destination is Jatiluwih – a name that literally translates to “really, really beautiful” – and it lives up to that name in every sense. Famed for its UNESCO-listed rice terraces, Jatiluwih offers a glimpse into Bali’s rural soul.

Upon arrival, while your friend prepares your bike, take a moment to relax with a cup of fresh local coffee at a cozy nearby café. The calm, cool air and panoramic views set the tone for what’s to come.

Before you hop on the bike, double-check that everything feels right – comfort and stability will make your journey much more enjoyable. The cycling route is a delightful mix of paved roads, dirt tracks, and narrow paths weaving through vivid green rice paddies. Along the way, you’ll pass through small traditional villages, where locals go about their daily lives. You may see farmers drying coffee beans or grains under the sun, or hear the calls of roosters from cages holding fighting cocks – a common cultural feature in rural Bali.

As you cycle further into the countryside, the atmosphere becomes increasingly peaceful. You’ll feel miles away from the bustling tourist zones of southern Bali. Vast, emerald-colored fields stretch out before you, bordered by mountains and distant temples. The landscape offers photo opportunities at every turn.

If you’re planning to visit any temples during your journey – and you should – don’t forget to bring a sarong. It’s a requirement to cover up before entering sacred spaces. If you don’t have one, just ask your guide. They can help you purchase one from a local village vendor for a very affordable price.

Also, keep a swimsuit handy! The route passes several secluded hot springs – natural gems where you can take a rejuvenating dip and relax your muscles mid-ride.

After a few scenic hours on the bike, you’ll take a break for lunch at a local restaurant with a spectacular view of the rice terraces below. It’s the perfect time to enjoy some Balinese cuisine while soaking in the tranquil scenery.

Your day doesn’t end there. After lunch, your journey continues to Pura Luhur Batukaru, one of Bali’s most spiritual and lesser-known temples. Hidden among the dense forests of Mount Batukaru, the temple is surrounded by streams and thick greenery. This peaceful setting creates a mystical atmosphere that honors the mountain’s guardian spirit. In the past, this temple was even considered the state temple during the time when Tabanan was an independent kingdom.

This cycling adventure is perfect for those with a moderate fitness level. Some uphill segments might require a short push, especially during the warmer parts of the day, but they rarely extend more than 50 meters. You’ll also need good balance, as some paths are narrow and follow irrigation channels used in traditional rice farming.

Whether you’re a nature lover, a cultural explorer, or just someone seeking a peaceful escape, cycling through Jatiluwih offers an unforgettable experience in the heart of Bali.
