A Scenic Journey to Nuwara Eliya: Through the Highlands of Sri Lanka

One of the most enchanting ways to experience Sri Lanka’s hill country is by train. The railway line leading to Nuwara Eliya offers not just a means of transport, but a soul-stirring journey through some of the most picturesque landscapes in South Asia. As the train gradually climbs in elevation, you’ll witness a dramatic transformation in scenery — from the lush, subtropical lowlands to cool, mist-covered highlands.

Starting from the low country, you’ll pass fields of spice plantations and banana trees, typical of Sri Lanka’s warmer regions. But as the train ascends into the highlands, the scenery slowly shifts to pine forests and towering eucalyptus trees, offering a refreshing change in climate and atmosphere. The air becomes crisp, and the vibrant green hills begin to roll into view.

The most breathtaking segment of the journey begins as you approach Hatton, a quaint railway town nestled in the hills. From here, the views become increasingly stunning. On the left side of the train, you’ll pass sweeping tea estates that stretch across the mountains like green carpets, dotted with tea pluckers in bright saris. Two iconic waterfalls — St. Clair’s Falls and Devon Falls — appear in succession, cascading dramatically into the valleys below. These are perfect moments for photos, so be sure to have your camera ready.

Keep your eyes to the left again as the train curves — in the distance, you may catch a glimpse of the sacred Adam’s Peak, standing tall above the surrounding hills. This revered mountain is a pilgrimage site for Buddhists, Hindus, Christians, and Muslims alike and is particularly striking when seen from afar, veiled in morning mist or glowing in the afternoon light.

After approximately 4.5 hours, you’ll reach Nanu Oya Station, the closest railway stop to Nuwara Eliya. From here, it’s a short and scenic 15-minute drive to the town itself, often referred to as “Little England” for its cool climate and colonial charm. Nuwara Eliya is famous for its tea culture, British-style architecture, and serene lakeside views.

Important Travel Notes

Train tickets for this route are in limited supply and can usually be purchased only a short time in advance. As such, seats are not guaranteed. We recommend booking as early as possible, especially during peak seasons (December–April and July–August), as demand can be high due to the popularity of this scenic route.

In the event that train tickets are unavailable, we will arrange for private transportation by car from Gampola to Nuwara Eliya. This alternative route offers a journey of similar duration, also taking you through the beautiful central highlands, albeit from a different perspective.

What to Bring for the Journey

  • A light jacket or sweater – The temperature drops as you ascend.

  • Camera or smartphone – For capturing the tea fields and waterfalls.

  • Snacks and water – Available on board in limited supply, but bringing your own is wise.

  • Travel pillow or neck support – The journey is long and seating may not always be comfortable.

Whether you travel by train or car, the route to Nuwara Eliya is an unforgettable adventure through Sri Lanka’s most scenic highlands. Let the lush green hills, cascading waterfalls, and cool mountain air set the tone for your stay in one of the island’s most iconic destinations.
