Wartime Saigon Tour: CIA Sites, Secret Bases & Pho History

Start your day retracing the steps of history in the heart of Ho Chi Minh City. Your journey begins at the monument in front of the US Consulate, then continues to the former CIA building—where, in 1975, helicopters evacuated the last American personnel from the rooftop during the fall of Saigon. (Note: Outside visit only.)

From there, head to the Rex Hotel’s rooftop café, a legendary gathering spot for American officers and journalists during the Vietnam War. Over a drink, soak in panoramic views and hear your guide recount stories from the war era, when this rooftop served as an unofficial press center.

Next, visit the Reunification Convention Hall—formerly known as the Independence Palace—where power in South Vietnam was once centralized. Your tour continues to the historic residence of Henry Cabot Lodge, U.S. Ambassador to South Vietnam, whose covert activities in the 1960s played a significant role in shaping the country’s future.

While relaxing with a refreshing drink, you’ll watch a 10-minute documentary capturing the streets and spirit of 1960s Saigon.

Cap off your historical immersion with a bowl of pho at one of the city’s most fascinating hidden gems: Pho Binh, located at 7 Ly Chinh Thang Street. Unknown to many, this humble noodle shop was once a secret Viet Cong command post, where leaders orchestrated the Tet Offensive of 1968. Upstairs, you’ll find a small room filled with the family’s photo archive, offering a rare glimpse into the war’s underground operations. Downstairs, enjoy an authentic taste of history with a steaming bowl of pho before heading back to your hotel.
