However, Songkran also includes the lively throwing of water on the streets, with some carrying brightly colored talc that is thrown on passers-by to celebrate the new year. Southern Vietnam’s driest months are typically April and May, when travelers are guaranteed the sunniest times of the year in the southern-most cities while still escaping the heat that the coming months bring. Travellers to Cambodia during the festivities will often see small sand hills built near temples decorated with five flags to mark Buddha’s five disciplines.

The Northern city of Chiang Mai bids farewell to the dry season and welcomes the rains with a nine-day music and arts festival. The festival features a jam-packed schedule of traditional musical performances, art exhibitions, cultural demonstrations and plenty of delicious food.
