Spring in Southeast Asia
Spring is the season to travel in Southeast Asia! The vibrant cultures of Vietnam, Cambodia and Thailand come to life, and the bloom of spring offers some of the most unforgettable experiences for travelers.
Springtime illuminates the breathtaking beauty and cultural diversity of Southeast Asia and gives visitors the chance to experience the region at its most dynamic and inspiring. Below are some of the best reasons to see Southeast Asia just before summer hits.
Songkran Festival in Thailand
In an epic prelude to the rainy season in Thailand and towards the very end of the dry season is Songkran Festival. The celebration of the new year, Songkran was originally dictated by the lunar calendar, but since it has become a major attraction for visitors to the country. Fixed now from 13 to 15 of April, it is a time when locals return to their families. However, Songkran also includes the lively throwing of water on the streets, with some carrying brightly colored talc that is thrown on passers-by to celebrate the new year. The festival is perhaps one of Thailand’s most energetic and well-known festivals, and a great way to beat the heat.
Sunshine in Vietnam
Southern Vietnam’s driest months are typically April and May, when travelers are guaranteed the sunniest times of the year in the southern-most cities while still escaping the heat that the coming months bring. For northern Vietnam, the springtime welcomes the newly warmer weather after a long and chilly winter. New rains of the season bring out the country’s natural beauty. Flowers even bloom is frenetic cities like Hanoi! The Spring season in Vietnam is perhaps one of the most beautiful, and offers a perfect chance for travelers to see the country’s destination cities before the heaviest of the summer rains come.
Chaul Chnam Thmey in Cambodia
Alongside Thailand’s Songkran Festival is Cambodia’s own New Year’s celebrations, marked by some of the most vivid religious ceremonies in the heavily Buddhist country. The ceremonies are carried out at the country’s numerous temples and shrines, with “water blessings” that are decidedly smaller than Thailand‘s, but still common among the locals. Travellers to Cambodia during the festivities will often see small sand hills built near temples decorated with five flags to mark Buddha’s five disciplines.
Arts Festival in Thailand
The Northern city of Chiang Mai bids farewell to the dry season and welcomes the rains with a nine-day music and arts festival. The festival features a jam-packed schedule of traditional musical performances, art exhibitions, cultural demonstrations and plenty of delicious food. The event cements the quaint city of Chiang Mai as Thailand’s art and culture capital, and one of the best destinations for the Spring season in Southeast Asia.
Beachside Bliss
In countries like Myanmar and Cambodia, the months preceding summertime are sometimes the warmest of the year. However, this means that it’s the perfect time to see the region by boat. Take a cruise up or down the Irrawaddy River and discover the majestic beauty, despite high temperatures and heat waves. Explore the Thai Islands, or the beautiful while beaches of Cambodia, and make the most of your adventure.
