Visit Kuala Terengganu, Malaysia

Getting to know Kuala Terengganu

Located on the north east coast of the Malay Peninsula, a short 55 minute hop by plane from Kuala Lumpur, Kuala Terengganu is the capital city of Terengganu State. Originally founded by a family of Chinese traders in the 15th century, it has since grown from a single street into a bustling modern city.

Oil revenue has played a part in transforming Kuala Terengganu's appearance, but thankfully it's kept much of its original charm, and is still a stronghold for traditional Malay culture.

What to do in Kuala Terengganu

Observe traditional Malay culture in the ancient fishing and boat-building methods still practised today, and in the craft workshops where you can buy handmade batik fabrics.

Wander around Kuala Terengganu’s Central Market, a highlight of any visit. Here you can soak up the sights, sound and smells of the inhabitant's daily routine and explore the bewildering display of food on display. There is an impressive smorgasbord of fish for sale, fresh off the boats that dock alongside the market.

The city is also home to some of Malaysia’s most impressive mosques, including the Tengku Tengah Zaharah (floating mosque).

Eat! Kuala Terengganu boasts a fine selection of eating opportunities, with plenty of authentic Malay cuisine as well as some outstanding Chinese seafood restaurants.
