Getting to the Temple of the Tooth from the theater is as easy as a stroll across the lake. People formed the city around 70 years before they brought the relic to it in 1542, although Kandy had colonies there for at least 150 years before the arrival of the Tooth Relic, presumed to be a tooth of the Buddha. Perched atop the Dalada Maligawa, an island in the middle of Kandy, next to the artificial lake, rests the holy tooth, the holiest artifact on the island.
