Sigiriya Rock Fortress and Polonnaruwa

You'll go to the towering Sigiriya Rock Fortress to kick off your day. The breathtaking views from the peak make this the most spectacular Sri Lankan attraction for many tourists.

Built just before 500 AD, a double moat encircles the stronghold, the outer of which is now dry. Even though they are primarily dry, water gardens are a peaceful spot to relax before or after a climb. Monks eventually took control of the stronghold after only a brief period of human habitation. Halfway up the rock face, a spiral staircase supports the last intact set of frescoes - the most renowned in the nation. A water storage tank and the foundations of a vast royal palace are on top.

Although the ascent is very manageable, especially if you take your time, some sections of the stairs are entirely off-limits to anybody experiencing even a mild case of vertigo. A sturdy metal railing runs the length of the staircase leading up to the paintings, but the highest parts of the staircase make you feel somewhat exposed. Those who go up the mountain should take a moment to admire the rock formation. Try to imagine how people did the ascent without the modern stairways to complete your image of Sigiriya.
