The Born Free Foundation's (UK) "Elephant Transit Home" is within a minute's drive from Udawalawe National Park. Elephants who are ill or orphaned are fed and cared for here until they can be released back into the wild.

You are welcome to visit the center during the feeding periods of 10:30 am, 2:30 pm, and 6:30 pm. You can see the elephants as they follow a caretaker into the enclosure to get milk via plastic hoses with funnels attached. Some are anxious as they stomp and trumpet impatiently from behind a barrier.
