Whale watching

Whales, including blue and sperm varieties, see the southern coast of Sri Lanka as a popular spot.

Between December and April, when the seas are calm, you may see these magnificent creatures swim across the waters of Sri Lanka. During this time, whales and big pods of dolphins are often seen from the shore, within sight in as little as a few miles.

Depending on the sightings, group excursions often depart from Mirissa Harbour, near Dondra Point, at around seven and return later in the morning or early afternoon. On this boat, you will find life jackets.

The distance between Galle and Mirissa Harbour is about 40 minutes, depending on traffic.
