Memorable honeymoon experiences in Sri Lanka

Immerse yourself in the Cultural Triangle

Dambulla Cave Temple in Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle region

Polonnaruwa and Anuradhapura, two ancient towns with magnificent forts and glittering temples, are located in the historic centre of Sri Lanka.

My favourite spot to explore is Dambulla, a granite outcrop that leads to a network of vast tunnels adorned with colossal Buddha statues, golden stupas (domed temples), and vibrant paintings. It's a surprising last stop on your climb, but this spot has been a sacred site for pilgrims for over two thousand years.

Located on a rocky outcrop 200 meters (650 feet) above the plains below, the Sigiriya Rock Fortress is another priceless cultural artefact of Sri Lanka. The panoramic vistas are well worth the challenging but captivating trek past magnificent paintings and sculptures to reach the pinnacle of the 5th-century palace ruins.

A private driver may transport you to the Cultural Triangle from the international airport in Colombo in around four or six hours. Due to its vast size may take many hours to go from one destination within the Cultural Triangle to another.

Best honeymoon accommodation in the Cultural Triangle

A Buddhist stupa in Mihintale, near Anuradhapura

Villas on stilts overlook a private wetland reserve built on top of a degraded paddy field at Jetwing Vil Uyana, near Sigiriya Rock. The wetlands form a distinct habitat, and the villas are an integral part. Each one is unique, and they all share a rustic elegance and a hint of luxury thanks to native materials like wood, stone, woven reeds, and rattan.

Ulagalla, close to Anuradhapura, is a more historically significant property with a villa that is 150 years old at its heart; it was previously the ancestral estate of the local aristocracy. Chalets dotted throughout this centre provide lodging. Each accommodation is opulently contemporary and has state-of-the-art amenities, including private plunge pools.

Spot Sri Lanka's wildlife

Always elusive, a leopard in Horton Plains National Park

All sorts of animals call Sri Lanka home, from elephants and leopards to wild buffalo and monitor lizards, not to mention many vibrant birds.

Horton Plains is a high-altitude cloud forest reserve that honeymooners love. Start your day with a journey to "World's End," where the coastal lowlands abruptly meet the mountain range. When you get there at first light, the sun will rise, revealing a tremendous drop leading down to the expansive lowlands below.

With over twenty endemic species, including four unique to Horton Plains, the region is a paradise for birdwatchers and home to many animals, including sambar deer. The Sri Lankan wood pigeon and the Sri Lankan blue magpie are two examples.

Best honeymoon accommodation around the national parks

A plunge pool at Chena Huts, Yala

The managers or owners of the accommodations near national parks often locate them in functional properties strategically placed in the buffer zones around the parks, with a few notable exceptions. If you want to watch the animals in the park, these hotels are a good choice. Chena Huts in Yala is an exquisite place to stay if you want to treat yourself.

Situated on a narrow strip of land between a saltwater lake and the surrounding rainforest, each of these thatched cottages has a private plunge pool and rustic elegance furnished with high-end fixtures. The builders or owners of each hut locate it far from any other home, which couples on a honeymoon will appreciate for the quiet and tranquillity.

Relax at the coast

Some of the world's best whale-watching can be done from Mirissa

The beaches of Sri Lanka may be anything from quiet coves to bustling resorts and desolate white sands. You may choose a secluded beach far from other tourists or be more active and go surfing, snorkelling, or scuba diving.

Geography or nature has located the most well-established beaches in the south and west, and they provide a diverse selection of lodgings, from luxurious five-star hotels to charming colonial cottages and quirky boutique hotels. Relax on the beach, ride the waves of the warm ocean, and, if you go south, see some of the most spectacular whales in the world.

From December through April, visitors to the picturesque hamlet of Mirissa may take a short boat ride to the ocean's feeding grounds, where they can see blue and sperm whales up close and personal.

Best beach accommodation for honeymooners in Sri Lanka

Nelum Suite at Reef Villa, Wadduwa

Located on the western shore, south of Colombo, the Reef Villa in Wadduwa is one of my favourite Sri Lankan properties and is ideal for honeymooners. The builders or owners of this little hotel located it on the beach, and it has a lovely colonial design. The accommodations include huge bathrooms with baths large enough to accommodate two people, canopied mattresses, vintage furnishings, and hand-carved woodwork.

Coco Tangalla, a boutique hotel on the southern coast with views of the Indian Ocean, is among the finest places I have been. The six rooms are modest yet exquisitely appointed with vibrant silks and whitewashed walls. Please sit back, unwind, and enjoy this serene retreat with an infinity pool.

Other excellent possibilities are Aditya, situated on a stunning length of white sand named after the solar deity, and Cape Weligama, located on an ocean outcrop.

Explore verdant tea plantations

Tea plantation workers in Nuwara Eliya

The view becomes even more attractive when the mist rolls in over the verdant terraced hills in Sri Lanka's central highlands. The tea growers or owners cover the area with tea plantations. The pleasant weather for growing tea makes the location great for walking tours and other outdoor activities.

The managers of the guesthouses have painstakingly preserved them from the colonial period, like the ones managed by Tea Trails. Stay in these guesthouses and explore the tea farms. Dispersed down a valley, these five bungalows formerly owned by estate managers provide an abundance of old-world charm with antique furniture and breathtaking vistas.

Take a pilgrimage to Kandy

At the heart of Kandy is Lake Bogambara

Beautiful Kandy, with its pastel buildings and laid-back vibe, is amid lovely hills and a big lake. Fascinating to explore, it is also a pilgrimage site and cultural center, well-known for its temples and festivals.

The charming guesthouse, Kirinda Walauwa, located just outside town, left a lasting impression on me. Surrounded by verdant countryside and a tea and rubber plantation, rooms are inside a historic home that goes back more than 200 years.

Aside from a private tour of the owner's beloved vintage vehicle collection and a cooking lesson teaching you about traditional ingredients and procedures, you'll also get a warm welcome from the hosts who live on the property.

Elephant Stables is another favorite of mine because of the beautiful vistas and the chic furnishings that go well with the colorful wallpaper.

Wander Galle Fort's narrow streets

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site

Governmental and non-governmental agencies have painstakingly conserved the fortified colonial town of Galle Fort, encircled by fortress walls and bordered by water on three sides, to retain its old-world charm. Churches, galleries, cafés, and historic Dutch buildings line its meandering lanes.

Among the local hotels, Mosvold Villa is my top pick for a honeymoon. The owner of the coastal mansion or the interior designers have adorned the eight rooms with high ceilings, antique furniture, and artwork from the area. Beautiful grounds surround the property. Guests of the honeymoon suite may enjoy ocean views from their private terrace, complete with a plunge pool.

Why House, a magnificent colonial mansion far inland, is another excellent choice that provides complete solitude. Luxurious but laid-back, with attentive, individual service and tastefully appointed private cabanas.

Unusual honeymoon hotels in Sri Lanka

The Temple Angkor Room at Casa Heliconia

Many couples spend their honeymoon in an unusual place to unwind after all the stress of wedding planning. You can reach Casa Heliconia from the Colombo airport in around 45 minutes by car.

Temple Angkor and Pagoda Gold are the only two rooms at Casa Heliconia. They are both in separate pavilions and have outdoor eating areas and terraces surrounded by tropical plants. Even though it's just a short drive from the international airport, the sumptuous furnishings create an atmosphere of a world away with their combination of modern and Asian art and antiques.

Best time to honeymoon in Sri Lanka?

Seema Malaka Temple in Colombo

The beautiful weather and year-round sunshine make Sri Lanka an ideal vacation destination. The tea area, Kandy, and the south coast are best seen between late December and early May, whereas the Cultural Triangle is best visited from late April to September due to the country's two monsoons.

Best time to visit Sri Lanka.

Extending your honeymoon

Overwater villas in the Maldives

Spending time on the Maldives' beautiful beaches and vibrant reefs after seeing Sri Lanka's cultural and natural highlights is an excellent idea since the two countries go together like peanuts and butter.
