Boat and Bike to Cu Chi Tunnels. Transfer to the Mekong Delta. Riding: 20 - 25 km Meal: B, L, D Commencing our initial full day, we embark on a boat journey up the Saigon River to reach the starting point for our first cycling adventure. The bikes are prepared, allowing us to immediately delve into cycling through rubber plantations and small villages along the western edge of the country. By lunchtime, we arrive at the Cu Chi Tunnels. Before exploring this intricate tunnel system, we pause for a meal. These tunnels were part of the network used by the Viet Cong, the resistance army. The specific site we visit has been widened and transformed into a museum. It offers a captivating experience for those comfortable in enclosed spaces and provides an entertaining exploration for children. For those who may feel claustrophobic, there's a pleasant shaded area where you can enjoy a refreshing drink. In the mid-afternoon, our journey takes us into the Mekong Delta, with our first stop being the quaint town of Ben Tre, where a simple yet clean and comfortable hotel awaits.

Day 3
Bike, Boat & Transfer to Tra On

Bike, Boat & Transfer to Tra On. Riding: 30km Meal: B, L, D The Mekong Delta has evolved into a intricate network of canals, ranging from small enough to accommodate a small rowboat to expansive multi-lane canals used for shipping produce. Many of these canals are flanked by paths, both paved and unpaved, making them ideal bike lanes, even though motor scooters form a significant portion of the traffic. The pace is leisurely, and there is a mutual consideration for each other's movements. Today, we'll pedal along these paths, unveiling the crucial role the Mekong Delta plays in Vietnam's prosperity. Often referred to as the country's food bowl, in every direction, you'll witness activities such as planting, harvesting, processing, or enjoying food. We'll partake in some of the culinary delights ourselves, prompting the thought of whether this is more of a food tour than a bike tour. As the day warms up, our ride concludes, and we transition to Tra On by driving and boating. This village eagerly awaits your arrival. Tonight's accommodation is in the home of a local family, adapted to offer ample space and bedding. It provides a genuine insight into village life.

Despite being only a stone's throw from Hoi An, the scenery is authentically rural, offering a quintessentially Vietnamese experience. As one family eloquently noted, "It's like riding back in time compared to the modern amenities of our hotel." Starting our biking journey from the hotel, we navigate through hidden passageways and winding alleyways, pausing to capture the beauty of the iconic Japanese bridge. Crossing the bridge near the night market, we visit a local family employing traditional methods to make Banh Dap, a common breakfast staple in the countryside. Our cycling route leads us to one of the region's most picturesque villages, where we stop at a family home to delve into the tradition of family chapels. Our host, nearly 90 years old, shares his experiences from fighting in the American War. Continuing our journey, we pedal past rice fields and vegetable farms alongside small canals and waterways, eventually reaching a boat building site. Fishing remains the lifeblood of the province, and witnessing the construction of these boats is a remarkable and photogenic experience. Our final destinations include a traditional mat weaving shop and a family distillery, where rice wine has been crafted using the same methods for generations. If the timing aligns, we may witness families gathering to clean fishing nets between their journeys at sea. From here, it's a short ride to board a local ferry for a scenic trip back to town, offering fantastic views of the Hoi An waterfront. Once dockside, we indulge in lunch in the old town along the river, followed by a quick ride to return to your hotel. There's ample time for the kids to swim in the pool or take a dip in the ocean. For dinner, you have the flexibility to choose your own venue, with your guide available to assist in restaurant suggestions.
