My Honeymoon Ideas for Vietnam

Nighttime Motorcycling in Ho Chi Minh City

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam's largest and most cosmopolitan city, transforms into a vibrant metropolis fueled by a million mopeds every night.

Riding as a passenger on a motorcycle in Ho Chi Minh City is an exhilarating experience and an excellent way to explore areas that would be difficult to reach on foot.

I recommend taking an evening Vespa motorcycle tour with a local guide to discover hidden gems you might otherwise miss. Along the way, you'll sample some of the area's best cuisine at various restaurants, pubs, and food stalls. A particularly memorable dish for me was a huge rice pancake served hot and crispy.

After the tour, you have the freedom to return to your hotel, visit a club, or enjoy some live local music. I encourage you to embrace the sensory overload that awaits you.

Street Food Tours in Hanoi

Hanoi is often the first stop for many newlyweds and presents a stark contrast to Ho Chi Minh City. While Ho Chi Minh City is known as the "Pearl of the Orient" for its luxury, Hanoi retains the rustic charm of a riverside provincial capital.

Hanoi is famous for its street cuisine, and several street food tours are available. Local blogger Mr. Tu, whose site "Vietnamese God" has been highlighting the top street food vendors for over 12 years, is a great resource for food lovers. His expertise extends to restaurants, food markets, and the history of regional dishes.

What makes this tour exceptional is that it focuses on more than just eating. As you wander through the city, you'll notice its unique atmosphere, merging bustling activity with French colonial influences, such as tree-lined boulevards and delicious baguettes.

Hanoi at Dawn

In the early morning, Hanoi offers a dramatically different scene compared to the evening. People start their day with dance lessons and sports like badminton and football in the open air.

You can ride a ‘cyclo’ (a type of rickshaw) for a city tour around 5:30 or 6 in the morning, experiencing local life. Visitors can also witness the daily flag-raising ceremony in front of President Ho Chi Minh's Mausoleum in Ba Dinh Square. This ceremony reflects how seriously the Vietnamese take their national flag and the values it represents.

Live Like a Local

To truly understand the daily life in Vietnam, consider participating in a hands-on rice-growing tour in Hoi An. Wear traditional attire, including a conical hat and overalls, as you plow fields, harvest rice, and make rice milk.

You can even ride a buffalo (if you dare) and sample a variety of rice-based foods, including pancakes, crackers, and other delicacies. At the end of the day, enjoy a home-cooked meal with a local farmer and their family, gaining insight into the hard work and dedication of Vietnamese farmers.

Private Dining in a Cave

Private beachside dinners are a honeymoon staple, and Vietnam's beach resorts excel at providing them. Fusion Maia in Da Nang, just north of Hoi An, even offers breakfast on the beach, allowing you to enjoy the world-renowned South China Sea before the crowds arrive.

For a romantic dinner, I highly recommend the private dining cave at Six Senses Ninh Van Bay. This hotel has converted a wine cellar into an intimate dining room for couples, providing a cool, naturally lit space for a romantic dinner, perfect for ending your Vietnam honeymoon.

Nha Trang, one of Vietnam’s first seaside destinations, is now a bustling city with an airport. It takes about 40 minutes by car and another 20 by speedboat to reach the Six Senses, nestled on a beautiful horseshoe-shaped stretch of golden sand beach surrounded by forested mountains.

Where to Stay on Your Honeymoon in Vietnam

Another excellent option for a honeymoon or romantic getaway is the Six Senses resort located on the Con Dao archipelago in southern Vietnam. Once a penal colony under French rule, the islands now attract tourists with their stunning natural beauty.

The beach at Six Senses Con Dao gently slopes into crystal-clear waters, located in a traditional horseshoe harbor. Each guest villa features its own private pool. The natural wildlife adds to the experience, with long-tailed macaques sometimes stealing your sunglasses and giant black squirrels scampering through the trees.

The Best Time to Honeymoon in Vietnam

The ideal time for a honeymoon in Vietnam varies based on the couple’s preferences. The peak season runs from February to August, during which most of the country-except for the extreme north-experiences high temperatures and humidity. September and October tend to be the wettest months.

Due to Vietnam's diverse topography, it is often warm and dry in various regions. For example, you can typically enjoy clear blue skies and sunshine in the south during mid-December. However, the best time to plan your honeymoon in Vietnam is between March and May, when the weather is generally pleasant throughout the country.
